Ruth 3: The Threshing Floor

In each scene of Ruth, the location helps us learn about the progression of Ruth and Naomi’s redemption. Here, we find Ruth and Boaz in the threshing floor, where barley was processed. So in Ruth we’ve gone from Bethlehem during famine to Moab back to Bethlehem during harvest, and now we are in the place where the hope of harvest is processed into food. Ruth, in a way, ‘processes’ her redemption by having the boldness of asking Boaz to marry her and bring redemption to her and Naomi. I love her boldness, and I love Boaz’s response: “May you be blessed by the Lord, my daughter; this last instance of your loyalty is better than the first; you have not gone after young men, whether poor or rich. And now, my daughter, do not be afraid, I will do for you all that you ask, for all the assembly of my people know that you are a worthy woman” (Ruth 3:10-11)

Here is the sermon manuscript from Sunday, August 5: Ruth 3: The Threshing Floor

Discussion/Reflection Questions:

  1. Why is it bold for Ruth to ask Boaz to marry her?
  2. How can you learn from Ruth’s boldness? Where do you need boldness in your life?
  3. The relationship between the three main characters, Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz, is built on trust. Why is there this strong trust between these three?
  4. How can we respond to this trust? Where can you improve in trusting others? Where can you improve in being trustworthy?
