This week we are looking at the story of Joseph, Abraham’s great-grandson. Jospeh had so many ups and downs. His story in Genesis is a roller coaster. I think we can find solidarity with Joseph in that; our lives are also full of ups and downs. This week, we’ll look at a big up and a big down in Joseph’s life, all captured by Genesis 39. The key passage in that story is verse 2: “The Lord was with Joseph.”
We need to be reminded that no matter how well or how awful our lives can become, the Lord is with us, as the Lord was with Joseph. So, for this week’s Tuesday Prayer, we’ll pray for the awareness of God’s presence. There’s a spiritual discipline called “Practicing the Presence” and one easy way to perform this practice is to pray this:
“I am here, Lord.”
“I am here.”
“I am here.”
It’s that simple. When you are interrupted, pray that. Remind yourself that you are present to God as God is present to you. “We may ignore, but we can nowhere evade, the presence of God” (C.S. Lewis). Praying “I am here” keeps us from ignoring God’s presence.
Grace and peace!
