Recently, I’ve had a pastor friend recommend listening to the artist Will Reagan. Since the recommendation, his music has filled my office. One piece of the song “No Better Time” from the album “Live at the Banks House” struck me. Some key lyrics:
“Help me find my own flame
Help me find my own fire
I want the real thing
I want Your burning desire”
“Why wait for tomorrow
When I can have You today?
Why wait for tomorrow
When I can have the change?
I can have the change”
“So, change me by Your beauty, God
Help me find my own flame”
That bolded question, “Why wait for tomorrow / When I can have You today?” struck me. I had never thought of this before, but my tendency to procrastinate can creep into my own spiritual life. Spending time in solitude and prayer, reading Scripture, etc. can be pushed back for something that feels more ‘immediate’. The conviction of not waiting until tomorrow to connect with God hit me like a ton of bricks. I’m guilty of that. And I need that change…”Why wait for tomorrow / When I can have the change? / I can have the change…So, change me by Your beauty, God / Help me find my own flame.”
I’m probably not alone in this. Let’s commit to avoid the temptation to “wait for tomorrow” to grow closer to God. We can grow closer to God today. Right now. God invites us to change now. Let’s accept that invitation.
Grace and peace!
