A week late on this one, as I preached this sermon on October 14, 2018. Forgive the tardiness!
Last week, we discussed Joshua renewing the covenant that God had created with God’s people with the words, “Now if you are unwilling to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served in the region beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15).
Whom do we serve?
A covenant is a relational agreement between two parties, in this case, God and God’s people. In Jesus, we are all invited into this covenant. We will never be able to reciprocate equally what God has done for us, but that does not mean that we are not still called to live into our covenant relationship with God. So, we are called to serve the Lord.
In the face of old and new gods, the Israelites were called to serve God alone. We face different ‘gods’ such as wealth, power, popularity, comfort, self-image, etc. We are called to serve God alone.
