Spiritual Practices (Starting Tuesday)

Spiritual practices, or spiritual disciplines, are individual or corporate actions that we take to grow closer to God.

In a period of time characterized by social distancing, let’s find ways to grow closer to God through spiritual practices that we might otherwise overlook or ignore during normal times. This is an invitation to practice these disciplines in order to bring us stillness: “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).

For some of us, these spiritual practices will be comfortable. We might prefer solitude and silence that social distancing offers some of us.

For some of us, these spiritual practices will be uncomfortable. We might prefer a more social way to worship and reflect on God’s goodness.

For some of us, these spiritual practices may seem impossible because you’ve got kids stuck at home driving you up the wall.

(Funny side note: on Sunday night Cassie and I video chatted with my parents, my sister and brother, and their significant others. At one point, my mom said, “I’m so glad I didn’t have to be quarantined with you three…” This made me laugh, but it also made me aware of how many of you are going through exactly that.)

With all that said, please feel no pressure to follow along with these spiritual disciplines and feel no guilt if you are unable. This is simply an invitation to make some spiritual lemonade out of the lemons we’ve been dealt.

Starting tomorrow (Tuesday, March 24) we’ll begin exploring some spiritual disciplines to help us grow closer to God during this trying time. I’m looking forward to it!
